Sense · Maturity assessment

How ready are you to sense what matters?

The Sense step builds the evidence state of the enterprise. This model assesses whether the organization can detect, connect, interpret, and trust the evidence required to make decisions.

Assessment flow

Where does your enterprise stand on sensing?

Find the level that best describes how well you spot, trust, and share the signals that matter.

1. Reactive

Signals are fragmented and manually interpreted; quality and provenance are uncertain.

Assessment rule

Teams collect signals for individual use cases with little shared trust.

Build a minimum baseline.

2. Defined

Priority sources, owners, access rules, provenance, and quality expectations are established.

Assessment rule

Common definitions and curated context exist for selected outcomes.

Connect intent to delivery.

3. Integrated

Internal and external evidence is connected through governed data and knowledge layers.

Assessment rule

Trusted evidence supports Actions and their critical assumptions.

Instrument with evidence.

4. Adaptive

Signal coverage, quality, and relevance continuously improve.

Assessment rule

Sensing improves based on observed usefulness, decision outcomes, and uncertainty reduction.

Extend learning across capabilities.

5. Neural

Trusted enterprise context is available in the flow of work.

Assessment rule

Relevant evidence, prior decisions, assumptions, outcomes, and provenance surface where decisions are made.

Sustain durable trust and learning.

This is a diagnostic, not a certification. Score Sense using the highest level for which the observable behaviors are consistently true. If behavior is inconsistent, score the lower level. The most useful result is the largest gap between the evidence the enterprise needs and the evidence it can trust.

What this model assesses

Eight lenses on how well your enterprise can sense.

Each lens is a sub-dimension of Sense. It names what we measure and the evidence sources we review, such as systems, artifacts, and leadership practices, to see how consistently your enterprise performs.

01

Signal coverage and breadth

Whether the enterprise senses the internal and external signals that matter to its outcomes.

  • Signal inventory
  • Coverage maps
  • Source catalogs
02

Data quality and provenance

Whether evidence is reliable, current, representative, and traceable to its origin.

  • Data quality records
  • Lineage metadata
03

Signal from noise

Whether the enterprise can interpret signals and separate meaningful change from noise.

  • Interpretation methods
  • Alert thresholds
  • False-positive rates
04

Integration and connection

Whether signals are connected through semantic and knowledge layers rather than siloed.

  • Semantic layer
  • Knowledge graph
  • Integration architecture
05

Timeliness and latency

Whether evidence is fresh enough for the decisions it supports.

  • Latency measures
  • Freshness service levels
06

Access in the flow of work

Whether relevant evidence reaches decision makers and systems when needed.

  • Access patterns
  • Embedded context
  • Decision-support usage
07

Evidence confidence and trust

Whether the strength of evidence is explicitly recorded and understood.

  • Evidence-confidence records
  • Confidence tagging
08

External intelligence and memory

Whether external signals and prior outcomes are part of the evidence state.

  • External feeds
  • Prior outcomes
  • Knowledge graph
