Decide · Maturity assessment

How ready are you to decide with confidence?

The Decide step chooses what to do and how far to go. This model assesses whether decisions weigh the evidence, the risk of being wrong, and the guardrails before acting.

Assessment flow

Where does your enterprise stand on deciding?

Find the level that best describes how clearly, quickly, and safely your important decisions get made.

1. Reactive

Assumptions and consequences are largely implicit.

Assessment rule

Actions rely on individual judgment, static reports, or disconnected recommendations.

Build a minimum baseline.

2. Defined

The method is defined for priority decisions.

Assessment rule

Priority Actions define the intended outcome, what must be true, guardrails, and initial Evidence Confidence and Consequence.

Connect intent to delivery.

3. Integrated

The method is applied consistently and traceably.

Assessment rule

Evidence Confidence and Consequence are assessed consistently; assumptions, rationale, policies, decision rights, and scope are traceable.

Instrument with evidence.

4. Adaptive

Decision behavior adapts to evidence and context.

Assessment rule

Scope, delegation, thresholds, and escalation adapt based on evidence, consequence, prior learning, and context.

Extend learning across capabilities.

5. Neural

The method operates contextually at scale.

Assessment rule

Well-supported Actions proceed without friction; material uncertainty produces bounded scope or human involvement.

Sustain durable trust and learning.

This is a diagnostic, not a certification. Score Decide using the highest level for which the observable behaviors are consistently true. If behavior is inconsistent, score the lower level.

What this model assesses

Eight lenses on how well your enterprise can decide.

Each lens is a sub-dimension of Decide. It names what we measure and the evidence sources we review, such as systems, artifacts, and leadership practices, to see how consistently your enterprise performs.

01

Action and outcome clarity

Whether each material decision names an explicit Action and intended outcome.

  • Action records
  • Decision logs
02

Assumption discipline

Whether the enterprise identifies what must be true across the five lenses.

  • “What must be true” records
  • Five-lens analyses
03

Evidence Confidence

Whether the strength of supporting evidence is assessed consistently.

  • Confidence scores
  • Rationale
04

Consequence

Whether the cost of being wrong is assessed distinctly from evidence.

  • Consequence assessments
  • Risk records
05

Policy guardrails

Whether applicable policies and external constraints are applied to the Action.

  • Policy records
  • Guardrail checks
  • Exceptions
06

Decision rights

Whether the right people or systems hold the decision and are accountable.

  • Decision-rights matrices
  • Approval traces
07

Scope selection

Whether Action scope matches uncertainty and consequence.

  • Scope rationale
  • Threshold records
08

Traceability and explainability

Whether the rationale is explicit, connected, and reviewable.

  • Rationale traces
  • Decision records
